NoiseFloor Festival

The 3rd annual NoiseFloor festival of experimental electronic music and sonic art will be taking place at Staffordshire University in the West Midlands, UK, between 1st and 4th May 2012. I am lucky enough to be playing one of my recent pieces Rip there in full 8-channel glory in the 2nd concert on Thursday in their wonderfully intimate TV studio. Head over to the music page for a stereo preview of the piece.

The festival will be formed from 9 concerts over 4 days featuring acousmatic music, electronica and live performances from over 50 contributing artists and composers from the UK and the rest of the world. All concerts are free to attend. For more info on the festival head to noisefloor.co.uk where you can find out about the other artists and concerts taking place.

Rip

I’ve managed to put together a stereo reduction of one of my recent pieces, Rip, which I’m pretty happy with. It actually works much better than I thought it would, especially over headphones, where a lot of the front-back movement is preserved. The original version comes in glorious 8-channels, but has been reduced to stereo using some of the the transcoding externals in the IRCAM Spat package for Max/MSP. Have a listen to it on my Soundcloud page.

NIME 2011: Orfi – Co-creative Tangibles

Orfi is a project developed by the group of artists in the MusicalFieldsForever. The installation uses a collection of soft, fuzzy, winged modules which communicate wirelessly to a master module which generates the sounds. All the modules were suspended from the stairwell on elastic chords which gave them a sense of weightlessness when you played with them. The Orfi modules, or cushions if you like, communicate wireless with each other. So you can freely build, throw, play in and with the modules as you like. Orfi responds in changeable graphics, light and music, when you bend the wings of the modules.

The name “Orfi” comes from “Or” for origami and “fi” for “field”. But Orfi also refers to Orpheus, the father of music in Greek mythology. He who according to the myth could make rocks dance. It is almost like Orfi…

The Orfi modules were very fun to play with and make music. This sort of interactive application would be brilliant for group music-making situations with non musicians. The video below shows me and some mates having some fun with the live-sampling mode.

NIME 2011: The Reaktable

This year’s NIME festival welcome the Reactable team back, giving a concert on the opening night by expert Carles López, and a keynote presentation by Sergi Jordà on the history, inspiration and evolution of the Reactable series of products.

The Reactable was originally developed in 2003 at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, as one of the first fully integrated modular systems for making music, with a versatile multi-touch interface with visual feedback on how the modules are linked and the parameters available for control. The novel interface for the reactable uses a series of blocks, each with their own function in the signal generation chain (oscillators, samplers, filters, sequencers etc.) which the user can then arrange on the table to create an instrument. Moving, rotating and twisting the blocks then changes the signal flow, groups modules together, and manipulates parameters which can be selected by the user.

The multi-touch interface with its visual feedback not only speeds up the work flow of the musician, by allowing them instant access to the sound generators and their parameters, but also offers new ways of interacting with sound and technology. Particularly exciting is the potential for group performance and the opening up of music technology through an easy to understand system of modules with simple graphic feedback.

So far the Reactable has received a number of awards for innovation in technology and user interaction, including the Prix Ars Electronica, and appeared on Bjork’s Volta world tour. To date the Reactable range has expanded to include the traditional performance version of the instrument, alongside a more robust version for installations in museums, and a software version for iPad. Personally I would love to see them progress further with research into potential for this technology to be used as a pedagogical tool to engage people in music, performance and interaction, as well as its potential for multi-user scenarios.

Have a look at the video below of Carles López performing on the Reactable at the NIME 2011 opening concert.

BiLE in Liverpool

This Sunday (15th May), BiLE will be giving an informal performance at the Electroacoustic Composition Forum in Liverpool. The concert takes place in the Holy Trinity Church Hall, Wavertree, L15, kicking off at 5pm. Its really exciting to be taking BiLE on its first outing outside of Birmingham and can’t wait to show the people of Liverpool what we are doing.

We will be performing a selction of pieces, including new works by Julien Guillamat, Jorge Garcia Moncada and Charles Céleste Hutchins as well as our version of network music classic Stuck Note by Scot Lancaster-Gresham of The Hub and Right Durations from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Aus den Sieben Tagen. The concert will also feature a quick talk/demo on what BiLE are doing and how we work together, with the chance to take part in performances of both Stuck Note and Partially Percussive.

For more info about the concert head to newdigitmusik.com. In the meantime have a listen to a recording from an improvisation on the text from Right Durations (Stockhausen).

Sonorities Festival 2011

Earlier this month it was the Sonorities Festival of new music, taking place at SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre) at Queen’s University Belfast. Had a brilliant weekend of electroacoustic, instrumental and interactive music (partly helped by the fantastic weather!) performed by musicians from all over Europe and America. Notable mentions go to Visa Kuppola (Outspread), Duncan MacLeod (Ellipse) and Graeme Truslove (Divergent Dialogues)

I was lucky enough to play my piece Steel Curtain over SARC’s wonderfully refined 32 loudspeaker system. It was an unusual experience, with their system being much more designed towards very accurate reproduction of acoustic images embedded within pieces of music, rather than an acousmonium for real-time spatialisation of acousmatic music. Everyone’s pieces sounded extremely clear and defined, and I can certainly say that for my piece the system gave an almost faultless representation of the piece which I composed in the studio. I particularly enjoyed the underfloor speakers, which helped give the sound a real grounding to the floor which aided any sensation of immersion and gave a much more ‘real’ acoustic image when playing environmental recordings.

I managed to get a few pictures of the system in its full technicolor glory (not an exaggeration…). Click through the slide-show below to have a look.

BiLE @ SOUNDkitchen

Bile at soundkitchenOn the 17th March, BiLE (Birmingham Laptop Ensemble) are premiering at the Hare & Hounds, as part of the Balkan Fusion night hosted by SOUNDkitchen. All six performers are teaming up in a live electroacoustic set playing a new score by Jorge Garcia Moncada followed by a classic live electronics piece from The Hub. BiLE are also joined by glitch artist Antonio Roberts who is providing live visuals. Leading into the set, me and Shelly Knotts will be working on laptops alongside Kurdish violinist Fouad Ibrahim and percussionist Zirak Hamad, performing a mash-up of live processing and Klezmer music.

Its shaping up to be a great night and I can’t wait for my first live laptop performances and working with some of the other musicians there. Tickets are £4 in advance from theTicketSellers, or can be picked up on the door. For more info about this and other nights, check out the SOUNDkitchen page.

Hope to see you there!

BEAST presents… Espaces!

beast presents espacesComing up at the mac this weekend is the first BEAST event of 2011, featuring guest appearances from Annette Vande Gorne and Kees Tazelaar. Annette will be curating her own concert of acousmatic music, whilst Kees is presenting a reconstruction of Varese’s Poeme électronique, originally composed for the 1958 Brussels World Fair. Surrounding these two concerts will be performances of new acousmatic works composed in Birmingham and abroad, including my new 8-channel work, Centrifuge. SOUNDkitchen’s STONEsoup event is also taking place on the Friday night – a unique collaboration between 13 Birmingham based sound and visual artists. All the concerts will be played over BEAST’s immersive multi-speaker sound system who are taking over the Foyle Studio at the mac with over 70 loudspeakers! Tickets are available now from the mac.

STONEsoup

A short étude to contribute towards the STONEsoup event which is being hosted by SOUNDkitchen on the 4th March in association with BEAST. STONEsoup brings together contributions from 12 other artists, mixing a variety of styles up into a single piece to be performed on BEAST’s immersive multi-speaker sound system. The piece uses sound recorded exclusively in Birmingham, with notable appearances from the Bournville – New Street train line and a now sadly defunct metal press works in Stirchley.

Date of performance: 4th March 2011 – Midlands Art Centre

Check out the STONEsoup page at soundkitchenuk.org for more info.
